A 1970s series with a strong focus on symbolism
This is a silk screen print by Japanese artist Kumi Sugai (1919-1996), known internationally as "The Sugai of the World," who was based in Paris, France.
Sugai, who gained significant recognition in the 1950s for his delicate and finely detailed works, transitioned his style over the years. By the 1960s, his work evolved toward a standardized pattern approach, and by the 1970s, he further intensified the symbolic quality of his art. This period gave rise to a series of works, including the renowned Festival series, which exemplified his dedication to this symbolic form of expression.
