Toshiyuki Tani / Japanese Paper Lantern Shade / Tsumugi (B-type)
A Lighting Piece Combining Washi Lantern and Bamboo Craft
“TSUMUGI,” designed by lighting artist Toshiyuki Tani, is a washi lantern that unites the flexibility of bamboo with the gentle texture of washi paper, carrying forward Japanese aesthetics into the present.
Attention to Detail in the “Higo” Framework
In traditional washi lanterns, bamboo or wire ribs are typically used. In this work, however, thin washi paper is wrapped around PET resin ribs, creating a softer texture while reducing the shadows cast by the structure itself.
By intentionally narrowing the spacing between each rib, a more delicate expression is achieved. Approximately 75 meters of rib material are used in a single lantern, embodying an accumulation of meticulous handwork within its refined presence.
The bamboo ribs (round higo) are not heat-pressed into shape; instead, they are slowly bent while preserving the natural flexibility of bamboo. By avoiding excessive correction by hand and allowing the material to retain its natural “breath,” each curve carries subtle irregularities and individuality, reflecting the rhythm of nature itself.
Craftsmanship and Nature’s Subtle Variations
This piece is created through delicate, thread-like movements of the fingers, expressing warmth and the gentle presence of human touch.
From a single piece of bamboo, each form emerges through a dialogue between artisan skill and nature’s unpredictability. Experienced bamboo craftsmen listen to the voice of the material, subtly transforming its expression with each cut and adjustment.
The thickness of the paper, the direction of its fibers, and the way layers overlap—everything is measured by hand, eye, and intuition, gently shaped through refined, thread-like gestures.
Through the harmony of bamboo and washi, soft shadows and a quiet yet powerful presence are born.
A light that quietly accompanies a space, gently unravels the mind—
“TSUMUGI” continues to illuminate Japanese aesthetics into the future, a hundred years ahead.
