TETSUO MIZU / Lithograph "Chopin" gold frame

TETSUO MIZU / Lithograph "Chopin" gold frame

The Flag Series ー the Signature Works of Internationally Acclaimed Japanese Artist

This lithograph belongs to the celebrated “Flag Series” by Japanese painter Tetsuo Mizu (Tetsuo Mizushima), whose work continues to gain global recognition.

The “Flag Series,” which rose to prominence in the 1980s, employs the visual language of international maritime signal flags—each representing an alphabet letter or numeral, a communication system established in the mid-19th century. Mizu ingeniously transforms each letter of a title into its corresponding flag, creating abstract compositions with a distinctive worldview.

This particular piece spells out “CHOPIN” through a unique arrangement of flags, fusing a systematic, graphic structure with organic lines and textured brushwork. The result is a lyrical depth that resonates not only in Japan but also across European and American art circles.
