2016 Good Design Award-Winning Mirror Exploring the Potential of Rattan
This wall-mounted rattan mirror was designed by TORAFU ARCHITECTS. Its name, wawa, comes from its unique “double-ring” form, created by spiraling thick rattan into a circular frame. Simple yet striking, the design highlights the flexibility and strength of rattan, carefully handcrafted one by one by YMK Nagaoka, a trusted rattan furniture maker in Niigata, Japan.
More than just a functional mirror, it also serves as a decorative wall piece, allowing you to experience the natural charm of rattan in daily life. With its timeless simplicity, the mirror can be enjoyed for years without growing tired of it, while the evolving patina of the rattan adds character over time.
The frame is slightly offset from the wall, giving the piece a light and airy appearance. The back features a specially cut metal fitting, allowing you to hang the mirror at eight different angles to suit your space. The unfinished natural rattan will gradually develop a warm amber tone, creating a unique, rich texture with age.
Award-Winning Japanese Design: Good Design Award 2016
Blending traditional Japanese rattan craftsmanship with a modern sensibility, this mirror stands out in a market often dominated by inexpensive imports. Honoring both the natural beauty of the material and the desire to preserve Japan’s artisanal skills, the piece was recognized with the Good Design Award in 2016 (size S) shortly after its release.
In 2023, it was further distinguished as part of the “100 Selected Contemporary Japanese Designs” by the Japan Foundation, affirming its place as a symbol of timeless design and craftsmanship.
