KUMI SUGAI / Etching / S ROUGE ET NOIR
Late Period “S” Series
This work is by Japanese painter Kumi Sugai (1919–1996), celebrated internationally as “Sugai of the World” while based in Paris. Beginning in 1987, Sugai created an extensive body of paintings known as the “S” Series, a defining project of his later years.
Speaking about the series, Sugai explained:
“I have always loved this shape. Rather than doing something different each time, I decided to pursue the pattern I love most. I like curves, and this form happens to resemble the initial S of my name. It felt perfect, so I decided to continue with it indefinitely.”
This particular piece features a motif of two stylized S shapes arranged in opposite directions, embodying the elegant curves and bold abstraction that characterize Sugai’s mature style.
