Toshiyuki Tani / RON / Japanese Paper Lantern Shade

Toshiyuki Tani / RON / Japanese Paper Lantern Shade

Elegant Washi Pendant Light Showcasing the Warmth of Paper and Exquisite Japanese Craftsmanship

Designed by lighting artist Toshiyuki Tani, this handcrafted washi pendant lamp highlights traditional Japanese lantern techniques from Mito, one of Japan’s three premier lantern-making regions.
The washi shade is coated to resist water and stains, while the ribs feature eco-friendly PET resin and starch paste. Instead of bamboo or wire, thin washi is wrapped around PET resin ribs to create a refined texture and minimize shadows. Narrow rib spacing further enhances its delicate appearance.

The structure draws inspiration from Suruga Takesensuji bamboo craftsmanship—normally known for bending finely carved bamboo into intricate rings. Here, only straight-line assembly is used to convey gentle softness. Over time, the round ribs develop a warm patina, adding the subtle wabi-sabi character unique to bamboo.

For added versatility, the washi lantern shade can also be displayed inverted to create a distinctive look.

*For international orders, this item includes the shade only. The cord and light bulb are not included.
