Enamel lamps depicting Japanese landscapes

Enamel lamp using the technique of “hera-shibori”(metal spinning).
Curl has a unique shape in which the inside and the outside warp while gently reversing.
This processing applied to general enamel products was made by enlargingthe
application of winding the rim outside for reinforcement and to prevent distortion.
The motif of the shape is based on the roofs of the shrines and temples
that have formed the Japanese landscape since ancient times.
Curl uses the same curve as the roof of a shrine that draws magnificent curve.

Designer : Shuhei Shibayama

Born in Saitama Prefecture. Graduated from the Department of Architecture, Faculty of Science and Technology, Meijo University. After working as a designer at Tendo Mokko, a furniture manufacture in Yamagata, in the spring of 2014, he began activities under the product label “yama no katachi”, which advertises the charms of Yamagata, in the Tohoku region, from the perspective of monozukuri-style manufacturing and craftsmanship. Currently, he is expanding his range of activities with a focus on interiors and furniture, and he engages in interior design and administration at “3CHA WORK”, a shared office in Sangenjaya.

  • This product utilizes enamel, a material that has been used for everyday items since ancient times. It features a glossy, vitreous finish.

  • In the enamel manufacturing process, the shaping of the iron plate, known as the "base," is carried out using a technique called "spinning," which is the pinnacle of local factory technology. This involves rotating the metal plate while pressing a rod called a "spatula" against it to gradually deform it.

  • While typical enamelware has its rim rolled outwards for reinforcement and to prevent warping, Curl focuses on the curves created by enlarging this rim roll and integrating it with the form. They explored the shape and thickness of the "base material" together with enamel craftsmen.

  • The shape, with its gently curving inversions between the inside and outside, is inspired by the roofs of shrines and temples that have shaped the Japanese landscape since ancient times. It also evokes the foothills of Mount Fuji, which are deeply etched in the memories of the Japanese people.

  • Enamelware is a material made by baking a glassy glaze onto a metal surface. It is a composite material that combines the strength of metal with the beauty of glass. It is characterized by the beautiful colors and luster of glass, excellent non-adhesive properties and chemical resistance, and ease of cleaning.

  • It is said that the roofs of shrines and temples are made using a "cycloid curve" (the curve of the trajectory traced by a fixed point on a circle as it rotates along a fixed straight line), which is an optimal curve for rainwater to run off.

  • A soft gradient of light spreads from the inside to the outside of the shade. The light poured in gently envelops the space at the heart of a gathering place, like the eaves of a shrine.

  • The design is meticulously calculated, even down to the balance between the shade and the light bulb. For the large size, a Φ95mm bulb will fit nicely, and for the small size, a Φ70mm bulb will fit well.
